In Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic & Social Council
Associated with the UN Department of Global Communications

In Bangladesh, journalists face dilemmas while covering news if not in the same magnitude. Political violence and non-political violence are major concerns for newsmen who cover events involving physical confrontation. There are occasions when reporters are seemingly left with no choice but to report one side of the story because of the difficulties in accessing information, resulting in a compromise with accuracy, balance, and truth of the incident.

BNNRC designed and implemented a Fellowship program for Bangladeshi journalists and news organizations with special focus on the conflict-sensitive issue. Responding to the “Call’’ for Media Fellowship on Conflict sensitive Journalism BNNRC received a total of 105 applications from the journalists involved in different media (Print, Electronic, Community Radio, and online) throughout the country. The Fellows have been produced and published/telecast/broadcast reports on key investigative strategies for verifying user-generated content in real-time, particularly during conflict situations under the guidance of three Mentors. A total of 10 Fellows were selected and guided by three Mentors. The Mentors were Ms. Angur Nahar Monty, Joint News Editor, News 24 TV, Mr. Amin Al Rasheed, News Editor, Channel 24 TV, and Mr. Sohrab Hassan, Joint Editor, Daily Prothom Alo.

The aim of the Fellowship Program was to foster a better understanding of conflict resolution and the news media’s role in protracting crisis issues. Considering the issue concretely and more sensitively the fellowship was provided for the journalists.

As a new window of journalism, it was a great success and achievement. The journalist community was very enthusiastic and inquisitive about the fellowship program. The Fellowship program has created great enthusiasm among the journalist especially young journalist of the country.
