Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has been implemented the project titled Connecting and Empowering Voices for Just, Inclusive and Peaceful Society project supported by Switzerland in Bangladesh

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-16 focuses on inclusive societies, democracy, strong institutions, justice and rule of law. SDG-16 is the key goal and the driver of all other sustainable goals. BNNRC aimed at fostering public debate for sustainable development for a peaceful and inclusive society. There is an intrinsic link between SDG-16 and SDG implementation.

To foster public debate and sensitize stakeholders for the meeting of these issues at the national and community level is very essential. BNNRC has been fostering public debates and sensitizing stakeholders at the national and community level with special emphasis on SDGs localization for a peaceful and inclusive society.

Goal: Enabling Environment to fight against poverty and injustice to contribute to sustainable inclusive development through SDG:16.

Objective: Men and women are empowered and connected to making a just, inclusive, and peaceful society.
Outcome 1: Institutions are engaged in public debate and policy advocacy for a peaceful and inclusive society
Outcome 2: Voice and participation of the youth and vulnerable communities in localization of SDG-16 is enhanced and amplified
Output-1: Institutions are engaged in public debate and policy advocacy for a peaceful and inclusive society
Output -2 Stakeholders enhance their participation and voice on the SDG-16 implementation process

Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC)’ s approach to media development & digital development is both knowledge-driven and context-sensitive, and it takes into account the challenges and opportunities created by the rapidly changing media environment in Bangladesh in line with giving voices for the voiceless.

BNNRC is in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) accredited with World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) of the United Nations and UN WSIS prize winner 2016, Champion 2017, 2019 & 2020 for media development.

Vision: Enable access to “on-demand” knowledge for all, using appropriate media to foster public debate for shaping their development agenda and assume responsibilities as citizens in the era of Fourth Industrial Revolution.

BNNRC Mission: is to enable a media literate, informed and participatory society so that the underserved societies can shape their lives and livelihoods through the following:

  • Fostering public debate, media pluralism and democracy using the power of information and communication
  • Amplifying the voices of vulnerable, marginalized and excluded people in development debates
  • Working with media and other information stakeholders to support people and communities to bring about positive changes in their lives and livelihoods

The UN General Assembly Resolution 56/183 (21 December 2001) endorsed the holding of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in two phases. The first phase took place in Geneva from 10 to 12 December 2003 and the second phase took place in Tunis, from 16 to 18 November 2005.

Geneva Phase: 10-12 December 2003

The objective of the first phase was to develop and foster a clear statement of political will and take concrete steps to establish the foundations for an Information Society for all, reflecting all the different interests at stake.

Nearly 50 Heads of state/government and Vice-Presidents, 82 Ministers, and 26 Vice-Ministers from 175 countries as well as high-level representatives from international organizations, private sector, and civil society attended the Geneva Phase of WSIS and gave political support to the Geneva Declaration of Principles and Geneva Plan of Action that were adopted on 12 December 2003. More than 11,000 participants from 175 countries attended the Summit and related events.

Tunis Phase: 16-18 November 2005

The objective of the second phase was to put Geneva’s Plan of Action into motion as well as to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance, financing mechanisms, and follow-up and implementation of the Geneva and Tunis documents.

Nearly 50 Heads of state/government and Vice-Presidents and 197 Ministers, Vice Ministers and Deputy Ministers from 174 countries as well as high-level representatives from international organizations, private sector, and civil society attended the Tunis Phase of WSIS and gave political support to the Tunis Commitment and Tunis Agenda for the Information Society that were adopted on 18 November 2005. More than 19,000 participants from 174 countries attended the Summit and related events.

The WSIS Prizes

The WSIS Prizes contest was developed in response to requests from the WSIS stakeholders to create an effective mechanism to evaluate projects and activities that leverage the power of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to advance sustainable development. Since its inception, the contest of WSIS Prizes has attracted more than 300,000 stakeholders.

Following the outcomes of the United Nations General Assembly Overall Review on WSIS (Res. A/70/125) that called for a close alignment between the WSIS Process and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (Res. A/70/1), the WSIS Prizes is the unique global platform to identify and showcase success stories in the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines and SDGs.

The contest was held for the first time in 2012 & rapidly gained attention and popularity within the ICT for Development community.

Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has been devoted into the WSIS process from 2002 and WSIS forum from 2006 quite a long time, provided great outcomes from Bangladesh showing efforts and development in ICT for development field in Bangladesh.
