Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC)’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. AHM Bazlur Rahman-S21BR attended the National Campus Journalism Fest 2018 on 27 – 28 July 2018 at Central Auditorium of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet Bangladesh

Around 200 Journalists from 22 universities under 27 journalists associations took part in university level, the two-day long festival fest for the first time.

Mr. AHM Bazlur Rahman-S21BR has facilitated a session on Tuning in to University Campus Radio and Campus Television at different University campuses in Bangladesh. The Campus Radio or Campus TV Station must be able to satisfy and adhere to the following principles; the basic objective of the Campus Radio & Campus TV broadcasting would be to serve the cause of the campus and community in the service area of the University Campus Radio & Campus TV;

It shall be unambiguously proved as a ‘non-profit’ organization or an institution and shall intend to provide the service to the local community; The University Campus Radio & Campus TV (UCRT) shall be operated by and shall be Broadcasts designed to serve only a specific well-defined local community and campus; It shall have an ownership and management structure that is reflective of the community that the UCRT seeks to serve; Programs for broadcasting shall be relevant to the educational, developmental, social and cultural needs and intended for necessary information sharing and be enabling the communal harmony in the society.

University Campus Radio & Campus TV broadcasting have three primary purposes: to provide quality on-air programming for universities and its coverage area; to involve the community members (student/teacher/faculties and communities) it seeks to serve through activities, programs, special events, and community services; to provide training and experience to its community members so they can involve themselves in program production and skills about state of art of broadcasting.

University Campus Radio & Campus TV has the following aims and objectives: to bring life skills and educational information, development motivation & entertainment programming to the universities students; to provide a platform to the students to build their communication skills and give them exposure to a working media environment. The Campus Radio & Campus TV Station also acts as a Community Broadcasting center addressing community issues and building awareness about them.

The Campus Radio & Campus TV Station also provides hands-on training to students and teachers engaged in media. It trains them in various aspects of the broadcasting program like sound production, editing, script writing, and anchoring. The Campus Radio & Campus TV Station shall advocate for access to information and communication, and promote open and diverse media.

It shall promote dialogue for driving progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), incorporate interrelated works mentioned in the National Five Years Plan, and other policies. It would also focus on Creating inclusive knowledge societies and empower university communities by increasing access to information and knowledge in line with protecting human rights, freedom of expression; universal access to information and knowledge; respecting cultural and linguistic diversity; gender equity and quality education for all. It shall reinforce rights & obligation, countering radicalization and extremism through the various program run by University Campus Radio & Campus TV Station.

National Campus Journalism Fest 2018 organized by Shahjalal University Press Club. SHAHJALAL UNIVERSITY PRESS CLUB is the organization of journalists of Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST), Sylhet. The organization has been arranging/observing various programs to enhance journalist’s ability and to keep the unity of them since its establishment on March 11, 1996.

It has been working for a long time with keeping the spirit of the liberation war of 1971, creative work and progressive thinking. Almost all members of Shahjalal University Press Club have been working in prominent dailies and online media as SUST and Sylhet correspondent. Currently, a number of ex-campus journalists of SUST are engaged in prominent houses of electronic, print and online media. They have been working with honesty and fame.

Mr. AHM Bazlur Rahman-S21BR had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Abdul Awwal Biswas, Professor, Department of Anthropology and Director of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and discussed the matters of how to set up Campus Radio and Campus TV at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology campus.

He has more than 20 years experience in leveraging community media and right to communication to create successful policy advocacy in Bangladesh in line with community media development. The BNNRC provides leadership and support for rural initiators to facilitate independent electronic community broadcasting services and to build and strengthen rural communities. He actively works to improve recognition of the community electronic media sector [Community Radio | Community TV | Community Film] & its work in and involvement with the communities it seeks to serve. BNNRC's outreach extends to local, national and international forums for communicating Knowledge for Development (KM4D). In this backdrop, communication is recognized as an essential human need and, therefore, as a basic human right. Our working strategies are: 1. Communicating on the Public Sphere: The role of communication and media in exercising democratic political participation in society 2. Communicating Knowledge: The terms and means by which knowledge generated by society is communicated, or blocked, for use by different groups. 3. Civil Rights in Communication: The exercise of civil rights relating to the processes of communication in society & 4. Cultural Rights in Communication: The communication of diverse cultures, cultural forms and identities at the individual and social levels.
