Meeting on Memorandum of Understanding among Ministry of Information, Community Radio and Access to Information (A2I) at Bangladesh Secretariat

A meeting was held on 2 February at the Conference Room of Ministry of Information in Bangladesh Secretariat, Dhaka on finalization about Memorandum of Understanding among Ministry of Information, Community Radio and Access to Information (A2I) Project. The honorable Secretary to the Ministry Mr.Golam Martuza presided over the meeting.

Representatives from 14 Community Radio Stations, Ms. Anwara Begum, Joint Secretary (Radio) Ministry of Information, Abdul Mannan, Additional Secretary(Administration), Md. Muhibul Hossain, Deputy Secretary (Admin), Mr. Kazi Akhtar Uddin Ahemd, Additional Secretary and Director General of Bangladesh Betar, Ms. Suparna Roy, AHM. Asaduzzaman, Local Development Associate, Tanjina Ashik, Communication Officer of  of Access to Information(A2I) Project  and Mr. AHM Bazlur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication(BNNRC).

Welcoming the participants and by appreciating the activities of Community Radio Initiators Mr. Golam Martuza mentioned the important role that community radio could play not only in disaster risk reduction, but also in implementation of MDGs

He also mentioned that Ministry of Information is determined to work for the sustainability of Community Radio. Mr.Kazi Akhtaruddin Ahmed, DG, Bangladesh Betar emphasized on providing continuous financial assistance to the stations. It is very important to work out within the policy for ensuring development advertisement to radio stations so that they can start broadcasting and generate income as quickly as possible-he added.

By accumulating all the demands of community radio stations, Mr. Hasib Hossain, submitted proposals on behalf of Community Radio Sector to the Honorable Secretary. By accepting the proposals, Ms. Suparna Roy from A2I, Prime Minister’s Secretariat assured that the signing of MoU with the Radio stations  and the activities would start very soon. This would help the Community Radio Stations to work with A2I Program more intimately.

At the end, the Secretary thanked all the participants for their active participation and valuable suggestions in the whole process.
