Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) in The UN WSIS Stocktaking: ICT Case Repository THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) RESPONSE special report – September 2020

The World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2020 represents the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community. The WSIS Forum, co-organized by ITU, UNESCO, UNDP and UNCTAD, in close collaboration with all WSIS Action Line Facilitators/Co-Facilitators, has proven to be an efficient mechanism for coordination of multi- stakeholder implementation activities, information exchange, creation of knowledge, sharing of best practices and continues to provide assistance in developing multi-stakeholder and public/private partnerships to advance development goals.

This Forum will provide structured opportunities to network, learn and participate in multi-stakeholder discussions and consultations on WSIS implementation. The Agenda and Programme of the Forum will be built on the basis of the submissions received during the Open Consultation Process.

Furthermore, the 2020 WSIS Forum (WSIS+15) will provide an opportunity to serve as a platform to track the achievements of WSIS Action Lines in collaboration with the UN Agencies involved and provide information and analyses of the implementation of WSIS Action Lines since 2005.

The WSIS Stocktaking process was initiated in October 2004 during the Tunis phase of WSIS, and in the years since has come to comprise of a database for the exchange of information on projects, sharing of best practices of stakeholders in the various regions as well as initiatives related to the implementation of the 11 WSIS action lines.The WSIS stocktaking platform provides various stakeholders an avenue to network and interact.

Since the first edition of the WSIS Stocktaking Report was issued in 2005, periodic reporting has been a key tool for monitoring the progress of ICT initiatives and projects worldwide.

The principal role of the WSIS Stocktaking exercise is to leverage the activities of stakeholders working on the implementation of WSIS outcomes, share knowledge and experience of projects by replicating successful models designed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As a part of the WSIS Stocktaking ongoing efforts to promote the good use of ICTs in making social impact, and in order to provide useful, replicable and actionable information to all WSIS community and beyond, the platform is now available for collecting projects and activities on how ICTs are assisting stakeholders in their everyday life, work, and combating challenges caused by this extraordinary pandemic.

The objective for this call for submissions was to encourage various stakeholders to submit reports on how they used ICT tools and technologies to help their communities respond to the coronavirus pandemic whilst meeting the WSIS Action Lines and SDG goals. The aim of this repository was to help stakeholders continue to partner, collaborate and implement projects, policies and measures in these exceptional circumstances. The call resulted in a big number of submissions made from ICT practitioners from around the world.

After careful reviews Two-hundred and ten (210) submissions were selected. Out of this two-hundred and ten submissions:

– thirty-two (32) percent came from governments

– twenty-three (23) percent came from civil societies

– twenty-two (22) percent came from the private sector

– seven (7) percent came from academia

– seven (7) percent came from international organisations

– nine (9) percent came from other stake holders.

Again, out of these submissions:

– eighteen (18) percent came from The Americas

– twenty-three (23) percent came from Western Europe

– ten (10) came from Eastern Europe and Northern Asia

– sixteen (16) percent came from Africa

– thirty-three (33) percent came from Asia and Australasia.

Out of the submitted projects:

– fourteen (14) percent promoted the SDG goal one

– seven (7) percent promoted the SDG goal two

– forty-five (45) percent promoted the SDG goal three

– SDG goal four was promoted by twenty (20) percent of the submitted projects

– two percent (2) of the submitted projects promoted SDG goal five,

– approximately one (1) percent of the projects exhibited or promoted the SDG goal six

– five (5) percent also promoted the SDG goal eight

– three (3) percent of the submitted projects promoted SDG goal nine

– two (2) percent promoted SDG goal sixteen

– two (2) percent of the projects submitted promoted SDG goal seventeen.

The submitted reports promoted the various WSIS action lines:

– thirty-one (31) percent of the projects promoted WSIS action line one

– thirteen (13) percent promoted WSIS action line two

– twenty-seven (27) percent of them promoted WSIS action line three
