Condemns the Attack on the Station Manager of Community Radio Nalta 99.2 in Kaligonj, Satkhira District, Bangladesh

Tuesday, 23 April 2013: Mr. Abu Sufian Sajal , Station Manager of Community Radio Nalta 99.2 was barbaric attacked by some miscreants at his home this morning. He is seriously wounded.

AHM Bazlur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has condemned the attack on Station Manager of Radio Nalta 99.2. “It is highly unaccepted and hatred that a community radio station manager is attacked and the staff were threatened. All individuals and institutions supporting human rights and communication rights should come together in condemning this attack,” he has said.

He has expressed shock and deep concern over the incident. The attack on Community Radio Nalta 99.2 Station Manager must be condemned in the strongest way possible. He calls upon the free society of the country to extend their support to Community Radio Nalta 99.2 and all Community Radio Station of Bangladesh as well as the free media.

Community Radio Nalta 99.2 started test broadcasting from 2010. The station is managed by an NGO run by youth group that aims to achieve bridging the information divide for rural development through community radio.

BNNRC demands a thorough a investigation of the incident and calls upon the local and national concern authorities in Bangladesh to bring the culprits to judgment and ensure safety of community radio station manager. “I call on the authorities to bring to justice the perpetrators,” BNNRC Chief Executive Officer said. “Attacking community media workers equates community media silencing. Democracy needs freedom of expression.”

Staff Member of BNNRC, has expressed shock and anger over the incident. It joins members and staff of Community Radio Nalta 99.2 as well as family and friends of Mr. Abu Sufian Sajal in wishing him a quick recovery. END|BNNRC|01711881647|
