Daylong orientation on ‘Gender Responsive Communication for Community Radios’ held in Dhaka

A daylong orientation on ‘Gender Responsive Communication for Community Radios’ has been conducted today (Wednesday) in Steps Training Room, Lalmatia, Dhaka. Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) organized the event in collaboration with Steps Towards Development with the support from Free Press Unlimited and European Union.

The event was participated by a total of 18 (Female-5 and Male-13) gender specialist and trainers from different non-government organizations (Borendra Unnayan Prochesta, Parittran, WAVE Foundation), civil society networks (Chuadanga Development Forum-CDF, South-West Informatory Forum for Transformation-SWIFT, Barguna Coastal NGO Forum-BCNF, Kurigram NGO Association-KNA, Borendra Uannayan Forum-BUF, Chittagong Social Development Forum-CSDF, Setubandhan-Bogra), lawyers, cultural activists, teachers as well as BNNRC and Steps Towards Development. This event has aimed to build capacity of the potential trainers of Steps-Knowledge Center on gender responsive communication in line with different activities and programs related to community radios for further intervention. The expected outcomes of this event will ensure quality trainings on the same issue to be held at 14 Community Radio Stations. It will help to enhance knowledge and skill of the community radio stations workforce to promote gender equality, women human rights and gender responsive governance in the targeted communities.

Mr. Ranjan Karmaker, Executive Director, Steps Towards Development-Knowledge Center and the renowned Gender Expert as well as Rekha Saha, Gender expert and women human rights Activist, facilitated the sessions applying basic communication skills, participatory techniques and styles in the light of expected roles and responsibilities of the community media.
Community Radios in the country were launched in 2011 with a vision to express rural peoples’ voices, ensuring women and gender development, Right to Information, Rural development etc. while Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) has been playing pioneering role from establishment to nourishing community media for effective rural development.

In this backdrop, communication is recognized as an essential human need and, therefore, as a basic human right. Our working strategies are: 1. Communicating on the Public Sphere: The role of communication and media in exercising democratic political participation in society 2. Communicating Knowledge: The terms and means by which knowledge generated by society is communicated, or blocked, for use by different groups. 3. Civil Rights in Communication: The exercise of civil rights relating to the processes of communication in society & 4. Cultural Rights in Communication: The communication of diverse cultures, cultural forms and identities at the individual and social levels.
